Besigye Advocates for Justice and Freedom in Christmas Message from Luzira Prison
Dr. Kizza Besigye, quoting from the Gospel of Luke (4:18-21), underscores Jesus’ mission to bring good news to the poor, freedom to the oppressed, and healing to the brokenhearted. He emphasizes that the true message of Christmas is one of hope and justice for all, particularly for those who continue to fight for their rights
“As we celebrate the birth of Christ this year, let us remain committed to our pursuit of freedom and justice,” writes Dr. Besigye. He urges Ugandans to embrace love and unity while facing the challenges of the present. “God’s love and blessings to you all. We shall overcome!” he adds.
On Monday, December 21, the People Power for Freedom (PFF) team, led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, delivered a truckload of food to Luzira Prison. The delegation also included Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura and PFF supporter Ingrid Turinawe. The delivery consisted of matooke, chicken, eggs, rice, flour, onions, tomatoes, and watermelons. The large quantity suggests that the supplies will be shared with other prisoners, not just Besigye and Lutale
Prison authorities have allowed the delivery of raw food since 2005, following an incident in which a high-profile suspect died after consuming poisoned cooked food brought by a visitor. The raw food is now prepared by inmates under strict supervision. This marks the second time in 19 years that Dr. Besigye will spend Christmas in Luzira Prison. He was previously detained during the 2005 holiday season on charges of rape and treason, both of which were later dropped by the court. Dr. Besigye and Lutale have been
incarcerated for over a month following their controversial arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Uganda, where they were charged with firearm possession before the General Court Martial. The two are scheduled to appear in court again on January 7, 2025
