19-YEAR-OLD ARRESTED FOR MURDERING FATHER OVER LAND DISPUTE

A tragic incident in Omumihanga, Kabale District, has shocked the local community, as 19-year-old
Nicholas Niwagaba is accused of murdering his father, Darius Turamyomwe, 52, over a land dispute.
The incident occurred last week when Niwagaba reportedly attacked his father at their home around
8 p.m. The altercation began after Turamyomwe refused to give his son a share of land, advising him
instead to become independent. What started as a family disagreement quickly escalated into
violence, leaving Turamyomwe with fatal head injuries.
His wife, Peragia Kyarimpa, discovered her husband’s lifeless body and alerted neighbors, who
rushed him to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital. Unfortunately, he died from his injuries despite
medical efforts.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the crime, stating that a manhunt for
Niwagaba is underway. The area chairperson, Patrick Tumuranze, reported the incident to
authorities. Police have processed the crime scene, collected statements, and taken the body for a
post-mortem examination.
Maate expressed shock at the brutal act, urging anyone with information about Niwagaba’s
whereabouts to help authorities. “It’s deeply disturbing for someone to commit such an act against
their own parent over a matter that could have been resolved peacefully,” he remarked.
The crime has left the community devastated, with locals calling for swift justice and emphasizing
the importance of resolving family disputes through dialogue before they turn violent. As the search
for Niwagaba continues, the incident serves as a chilling reminder of the dangerous consequences of
unresolved familial conflicts.
