The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has opposed President Yoweri Museveni’s directive banning police from granting bond to suspects, arguing that it violates the law. Museveni criticized the handling of village thieves, accusing police and courts of being too lenient. He emphasized that releasing suspects on bond contributes to rising crime and insecurity. The president referenced his trip to Karamoja, where the incarceration of 3,000 cattle rustlers reportedly led to peace in the region.
The ULS condemned Museveni’s order, highlighting that it contravenes constitutional provisions protecting the rights of accused individuals. The organization reiterated that justice should prioritize fairness and due process, calling for reform in handling corruption and crime.
