At a public event in Gulu, an uncomfortable moment unfolded when Gen. Salim Saleh, the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), publicly dismissed a song performed by musician Omulangira Suuna. Suuna, who had been invited to perform, dedicated a song to the OWC initiative, expressing his admiration for Gen. Saleh. However, the General’s initial attentiveness soon turned to clear disapproval. After the performance concluded, Gen. Saleh took the microphone and voiced his dissatisfaction, stating, “Musicians have failed to produce good music. You have sung nothing.” He further questioned why artists who are specifically linked to the OWC initiative weren’t chosen for such events.
Clearly taken aback by the criticism, Omulangira Suuna left the stage, leaving the audience in a state of stunned silence and awkwardness. Gen. Salim Saleh expressed his frustration over the constant visits from musicians to his home in Gulu City, Northern Uganda. “Musicians, I’m tired of you. I have to say this on camera. You’ve taken up so much of my time. I haven’t even had a chance to meet with NRM (National Resistance Movement) members. Can you imagine?” he remarked.
Gen. Saleh, who is also President Museveni’s younger brother, explained that musicians have taken control of several entertainment umbrella organizations that the government had set up to support them.Despite this, they continue to visit his home seeking financial assistance.stated that he has
already done more than enough to support artists, particularly musicians. However, he expressed disappointment that they still lack cohesion, training, and organization.
It is understood that several musicians had booked hotels in Gulu, where they had been staying for weeks in hopes of securing financial support from Gen. Saleh ahead of Christmas. In response, Gen. Saleh had a message for them: “I’ve done everything I can. I know you’ll criticize me on TikTok, Twitter, and other social media platforms. I’m sure I’ll be trending on TikTok today… but you lack organization, cohesion,
and proper training,” he said. He then called Ragga Dee to the podium, instructing him to ensure that all musicians from Kampala leave Gulu before Christmas.
